The Ultimate High Five Compilation
Across the American Southwest,
2024
(Made with Rex Delafkaran)
MATERIALS
INKJET PRINTS &
ROAD TRIP SOUVENIRS

PERFORMANCE
MAY 27TH - 31ST, 2025

A definitive compilation of every high five Rex and I did driving together from Chicago, IL to Los Angeles, CA.

Using the Great American Road Trip as a vehicle for dérive-art and foraging-art, over the summer, Rex and I decided to visit both our families in Orange County & Los Angeles, CA. We drove together from Chicago, IL, wandering aimlessly in the Southwest for four days sightseeing, collecting souvenirs, and writing before arriving to California. Every time we stopped the car (for gas, food, or sleep), we documented ourselves high fiving.

Souvenirs & Notes:

Rex spotted matching cellphone themed lollipops when I took her to Wally’s in Pontiac, IL
Marlboro Golds purchased from St. Louis, MO (the cheapest state for cigarettes)
By the time we got to Springfield, MO, we realized neither of us had a lighter
After waking up in OKC, we stumbled upon the American Banjo Museum, which randomly happened to be a block away from our hotel
When we got to Roswell, NM, neither of us realized how much the town would be covered in UFO themed kitsch.
It was always a goal of mine to see the giant pistachio sculpture in Alamogordo, NM, and Rex is the only friend I have who was equally as interested in seeing a massive nut in the middle of a desert.
In Quartzsite, AZ, right next to California’s state line, there was an old man selling rock related things. He sold us 4 bracelets, 2 of which we gave as gifts.
The old man also sold rocks, and gave each of us a chunk of Obsidian.
When we got to Rex’s mom’s house, Rex gave me a CD of her mom’s band to listen to on the drive to my mom’s house. Rusty Vail is a master of honky tonk.
